FAQs

 Are there specific eligibility criteria that must be met by corporations using this service?
Yes. The corporation must meet the following eligibility criteria:
  • Be a resident of Canada;
  • Not be involved in Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) activities;
  • Not be an insurance company;
  • Not file a return for the first year after an amalgamation; and
  • Not have a windup of a subsidiary.
The corporation cannot use Corporation Internet Filing to send:
  • an amended return;
  • a return for any year prior to the 2002 taxation year.
You cannot use the Corporation Internet Filing service to change the corporation's:
  • name;
  • head office or mailing addresses;
  • direct deposit information (including new requests).
Visit the CRA Web site for more information on returns that can be filed electronically with the CRA.

 Who can use Corporation Internet Filing?
If you are a tax professional and wish to use the Internet to file your client's corporation income tax return, you can use the EFILE On-Line service to obtain an EFILE On-Line number and password. If you are already registered to file individual income tax returns over the Internet, you are automatically registered to transmit corporation income tax returns, using the same EFILE On-Line number and password.

The corporation can transmit its own income tax return by using a Web Access Code that may be requested by contacting the CRA's Corporation Internet Filing Help Desk at 1-800-959-2803. The code will be mailed to the corporation's mailing address within a few days.

 Why should I use the Corporation Internet Filing service?
The main advantages of the Corporation Internet Filing service are:
- A reduction in general costs such as printing and postage; and
- Increased productivity with respect to tax return preparation and filing.

 What is the difference between the T1 EFILE On-Line and Corporation Internet Filing services?
Since April 2004, the Corporation Internet Filing system is partnered with the EFILE On-Line service in order to provide "one-stop" registration for tax professionals who file both individual and corporation income tax returns electronically on behalf of their clients.

EFILE On-Line is a service that registers tax professionals to transmit individual income tax returns over the Internet using an EFILE On-Line number and password. Tax professionals can register and use the same EFILE On-Line number and password to transmit corporation income tax returns.

 Can I use this service to file corporate returns with the Ontario, Alberta and Québec tax authorities?
The Corporation Internet Filing project's first phase relates to the filing of federal returns with the CRA. We will keep you informed of any new developments.

 Is the Corporation Internet Filing client authorization process different from the T1 EFILE On-Line/EFILE authorization process?
No, it is quite similar. For personal tax return purposes, the client must sign Form T183. In the case of corporate returns, the signing officer must sign Form T183CORP.

 What is necessary in order to use the Corporation Internet Filing service?
You will need an Internet connection, a browser with 128-bit secure sockets layer encryption (SSL), and the Corporation Internet Filing module.

 What are the costs involved?
The only costs involved are your monthly Internet connection fees and the purchase price of the Corporation Internet Filing module. The upgrade to a 128-bit secure sockets layer encryption (SSL) browser is available on the Microsoft or Netscape Web sites.

 Can I transmit batches of corporate tax returns?
No. This option may, however, be offered at a later date.
